-capital one tracks all of their promotional mailings, running about 10,000 tests a week
-very easy to track marketing campaigns on the web

- we track using google analytics, setting conversion goals for a campaign, such as user signups
- because we track, we can tell which campaigns are worth time / money, which are not

- very powerful, and free

-pandora is on a national tour of townhall meetings
-pandora based on the music genome project, which classifies and maps similarities between songs
-music genome project originally used a b2b model and pandora radio only started 4 years after the genome project started
-pandora started with angel investment--tim discusses when it's prudent for an entrepreneur to seek investment--"how much can you get done with just sweat, without borrowing money?"
-it's easy to ask an investor to invest in an existing product than to invest in an idea
-where does pandora's money come from--subscriptions, ads, affiliate commissions?
